Mark your calendars, the Davis Cemetery District will dedicate a permanent COVID-19 Memorial, a project three years in the making. The dedication event is set for Sunday, September 22nd at 11am. More details to come shortly.

PROJECT HISTORY: 

The Davis Cemetery District is planning a permanent COVID-19 memorial installation at 820 Pole Line Road. This memorial will feature a walking path, art installations, seating/reflection space, informational signage, and privacy landscaping. Visitors will walk along a path where they will pass under five pillars, each pillar artistically designed to represent those lost to the Coronavirus. The path will end at a reflections area where visitors can sit and take in the meaning of the memorial. As visitors leave the memorial, signage will be placed along the path describing the strength and resiliency our community has gained through the pandemic and will focus on looking forward, while remembering the past.

This memorial will provide a space for community members to remember those we lost and how the pandemic has impacted them personally.	A space to honor our first responders, essential workers, small businesses, caregivers, families, and friends while acknowledging those who have been disproportionately impacted.	Recognizing our community’s ability to withstand adversity and recover from the pandemic.

After a two-year hiatus, The Davis Canton on behalf of the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge and the Davis Cemetery District will host the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Davis Cemetery & Arboretum, 820 Pole Line Road.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

We always appreciate volunteers to aid in the handing out of programs and the removal of flags later in the afternoon. Please contact jess@daviscemetery.org if you would like to help.

Keynote Speaker: Dave Rosenberg

Dave Rosenberg, currently serving as a Judge of the Yolo County Superior Court since 2004.  Vice President of the California Judges Association. A former two-term member of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, and a former three-term member of the Davis City Council. Served as Mayor of Davis twice.  Worked on the Senior Staff of two California Governors. Served as Grand Master of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of California. Served on active duty as a commissioned officer in the United States Army during the Viet Nam era.

This year, the City of Davis awarded our very own Trustee Kellison, the A.G. Brinley Award. This award recognizes outstanding service in a particular area, such as in the arts, education, or health, or in a major project that benefits the community of Davis. Trustee Kellison’s remarkable commitment to our community is masterfully detailed in the December 28th issue of the Davis Enterprise which can be viewed here.

Family and friends of loved ones can order a holiday wreath to be placed on a grave or displayed at your home. The 22″ fresh Noble Fir wreath will be sold for $25 each. All proceeds will go to the continuous care and restoration of our beautiful cemetery. We have a limited quantity of wreaths, which do sell out each year, so please order soon!

 

For those looking for an alternative, we can place a solar lantern, suspended from a shepherd’s hook, graveside through the month of December. Lanterns are $25 each and will be removed after January 1st.

Due to COVID-19, the District has temporarily suspended in-person community outreach events, keeping health and safety our highest priority.

While we will not be hosting a formal Veterans Day program, the Davis Scouting groups have graciously volunteered to help honor our Veterans by placing flags. Individual flags, along with our internal roadway flags will be placed Wednesday, November 10th, and removed Friday, November 12th.

On an annual basis, the Davis Cemetery District holds a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on our grounds. This celebration is one of the last Mesoamerican indigenous-influenced rituals, honoring mother earth and all its ancestors. This celebration is part of an effort to create a community, a sense of belonging, and global awareness of cultural richness in our multicultural society.

A public altar will be set up outside the administration building for viewing. We also welcome contributions to the altar from our visitors

Fresh marigolds will be available for the public to place on graves in order to honor their loved ones

The Davis Cemetery District recognizes traditional casket and cremation interments are not always the options people are looking for. Many families are looking for a way to memorialize their loved ones, without interring remains. Below is a list of non-traditional memorialization options we offer. Our office staff is happy to help you select a memorialization option and answer any questions you may have. Scattering Garden: 

If you are looking for a scenic location to scatter your loved ones’ cremains, the district’s scattering garden may be just what you have been looking for. When selecting the scattering garden, you can choose a scattering location anywhere amongst our 24 acres that is not an active grave. You can then personalize a brick to be placed near our memorial fountain or within our rose garden patio.

Our staff will work with you to determine a scattering location and walk you through the process, before scheduling your service.

Scattering garden cost (Davis-resident): $800.00

Bench Donation: 

Whether you have a loved one interred or not at the cemetery, we offer a bench donation program as a memorialization option. You will work with the office staff to determine an appropriate location for the bench and will personalize inscription to be included on the bench. Since the bench is being gifted to the cemetery grounds, the cost is tax-deductible.

The granite benches are ordered through a local monument company who will provide you with an inscription proof to approve before the bench is engraved.

Rosebush Planting: 

Our newly planted rose garden is home to 17 different Floribunda and Hybrid Tea varieties. Planted by the UCCE Master Gardeners – Yolo County, this garden has been designed to accept roughly 20 rose donations. You will choose from a list of pest-resistant varieties and personalize an inscription to be included on a garden stake which will be placed with the rose.

Rose bushes are planteded in the fall and spring to ensure the best rooting possible.

Rose Garden Brick Program: 

The rose garden, located on the south side of the cemetery grounds, includes a large patio at the center of this garden. Families looking for a way to memorialize a loved one can have a large patio paver engraved. You will choose the personalization and location of the paver.

The Davis Cemetery District is pleased to announce the opening of our Memorial Rose Garden. Located in the southeast section of our historic grounds, nestled between the creek swale and memorial fountain, the rose garden is sure to bring peace and tranquility to our visitors. This area features two niche pillars, each space able to hold up to two sets of cremains.

Endowment (forever care): $500.00

Interment Fee (Open/Close/Service)(per person): $650.00

The district would like to give special thanks to the team of UCCE Master Gardeners – Yolo County who have spent countless hours designing, planting, and maintaining the rose garden beds.

Gallery 1855 is a local gallery featuring a local artist each month. Located on the historic grounds of the Davis Cemetery District the gallery was named Gallery 1855, in honor of the first recorded interment.

The gallery is open weekdays between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

We are currently seeking artists to fill our 2023 calendar. As a Special District, we prioritize artists from our District which includes Davis, Clarksburg, and West Sacramento. All artists are welcome to propose an exhibit by emailing Judy Fisher at judy@daviscemetery.org. Please include samples of your work with your inquiry.
