DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement\, Ben Duax: \nDavis Native Benjamin Duax has painting degrees from Hunter College in New York and the Glasgow School of Art. His recent work concentrates on lived digital experience\, capturing rapid streams of information through painting and printmaking\, as well as computer-based methodologies. Last summer when art galleries and museums were closed he arranged an online exhibit of international artists\, including several Canadians\, hosted at www.lite-of-worlds.ca. Recent work\, including the work on display at Gallery 1855\, involves collaboration with fellow Davis native\, James Ketchum and Leon Hu\, also known as Mondo Lava. Since 2017 he has been on the committee of the Butterbiggens Prize\, a bursary for Alumni of Scottish Art Schools. For information about additional work or exhibitions please see www.benduax.com \n

SUMMARY:2021 Dia de los Muertos Celebration
DESCRIPTION:On an annual basis\, the Davis Cemetery District holds a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on our grounds. This celebration is one of the last Mesoamerican indigenous-influenced rituals\, honoring mother earth and all ancestors. This celebration is part of an effort to create a community\, a sense of belonging\, and global awareness of cultural richness in our multicultural society. \nDue to the high transmission rates of COVID-19 in the county\, the district has made the difficult decision to modify this year’s celebration\, keeping health and safety our highest priority. \n2021 Dia de los Muertos Event Information\nFriday\, October 29th through Monday\, November 1st\n\n\n\nEducational signage will be placed along our eastern internal roadway\, just north of the memorial fountain\nA public altar will be set up outside the administration building for viewing. We also welcome contributions to the altar from our visitors\nWhile on the grounds\, visitors will be able to scan QR codes to listen to a welcome video and hear performances by Mariachi Puente\n\nThe welcome video can also be viewed here.\n\n\nFresh marigolds will be available for the public to place on graves in order to honor their loved ones\n\nVen a honrar a los antepasados y seres queridos\, que han cruzado al mundo de los espíritus. \nThe Davis Cemetery District would like to extend its thanks and appreciation to: \n\nThis year’s event coordinator\, Sandra Rodriquez.\nStrelitzia Flower Company for providing heavily discounted Marigolds.\n\n\n\n  \n
